Sawn or planed?
Sawn & treated
Rough finish, full nominal size, treated against rot. The standard choice for joists, studwork, fencing and anything outdoors.
Planed all round
Smooth on all four faces and slightly smaller than the nominal size once machined. Use where the timber will be seen or painted.
Nominal sizes
A 4x2 is named for its sawn size. Planed timber loses a few millimetres each face, so check before you set out.
Cut ends
Treat any cut end that will be exposed to weather, or you lose the protection exactly where water sits.
